Group Activities
November 2002 saw us reflecting on 12 months of meeting on the 2nd Sunday of every month at this venue.
When we first met we resolved to meet until the "War in Afghanistan" was over.A lot has happened since then ,we have an active No War Against Iraq group and a branch of the Tasmanians For Refugees in Launceston.
December 2002 was the first time we met on the second "Saturday" , coinciding with Human Rights Week
In December a gross human rights occurred in Launceston,by the Australian Government this has been a major focus ever since.
Our meetings will continue to offer Music, poems, peaceful thoughts/expressions and an Information exchange board both at the Square and in cyberspace.
A short report from a different community group each month will be featured.
The last year has been a very active period in June Professor Margaret Reynolds and her colleagues who were part of the UN delegation to inspect Australian Detention Centres, plus Australian Democrat Senator , Andrew Bartlett briefed us on the children overboard inquiry at forums, the Dissentor's book visited Launceston at Fullers Bookshop,Tasmanians for Refugees - Launceston was formed and a No Iraq war movement was formed..
There was also a major rally held at Launceston's City Park as part of a national action for World Refugee Day,on June 23.
Thanks to Ken Partridge we were able to meet in October at Chalmers because of the rain.
Launceston people also participated in the Siev-X Memorial with a rally and march, many of us also celebrated Christmas with a peace on earth parade in the annual Launceston Christmas Parade.
Note a standing arrangement in the event of inclement weather is to transfer over to Chalmers. The support of Ken is much appreciated, by many groups in the Launceston Community.
Remembrance Day Launceston 2001 saw about 50 people rally for peace at Princes Square,a commitment to meet until the end of the war in Afghanistan was made.
This was revised at our last gathering to include Jean Hearn's monthly Peace Meeting following our Peace Picnic.
Come and have your say on the open microphone on peace and asylum seeker issues.
